Question: JB, with recruiting instate such a hot topic, who do you think is the top recruiter in the state and how do they stack up against the rest of the country?
Judging how well a recruiter or school does really can't be determined by the class they sign as much as it can two years from the signing day and how those prospects pan out.
I'd have to say that Chad Morris and Jeff Scott each have done an outstanding job for Clemson. They are personable guys and come across as genuine with the kids and parents.
Shawn Elliott for South Carolina does an great job and can really sell the program to the big-name prospects who are being courted by other big programs.
South Carolina and Clemson do a good job of getting the kids they go after, but I would say Georgia has both programs beat, especially with the addition of Jeremy Pruitt from Florida State. There are many, myself included, who feel Pruitt may be the top recruiter in the Southeast and perhaps the country. He was a star recruiter for Alabama in 2012 and FSU in 2013. They also have Bryan McClendon, who's done a great job landing the big fish for Georgia the past couple of years, including Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall.
Question: Can you give us an update on all of the coaching vacancies right now in high school?
A lot of the jobs are being filled and I'll hit those first. T.L. Hanna and Westside, both Anderson County schools, hired Bruce Ollis and Scott Earley, respectively. Both are very good hires. Seneca got Gene Cathcart from Greenwood. Columbia hired Willie Offord out of Florida.
The biggest job remaining open is Greenwood, and there are interesting names associated with that one. Also Laurens, Lake City, and Saluda all are open. Saluda has interesting names as finalists, and I think they'll be naming their coach soon.
The Greenwood and Laurens jobs could affect several other schools. Chris Liner from Ninety Six is in the mix for Laurens but would like Greenwood. If Ninety Six comes open, look for former Wildcats coach Mike Doolittle to fill that spot, though he has been rumored to be in the mix at Saluda. Another name in the hat for Saluda could open up a 3A head coach/athletics director position in the Midlands if he jumps at the job.
