It's hard to believe this sentence may be written, but Greenwood High may hold a hidden gem within the state of South Carolina.
We don't even need to go over the list of high-level talents that Greenwood has produced over the years, players that went on to become standouts in college and then in the NFL.
Yet 2021's Jaylin Tolbert is a player that may - in a "normal" recruiting cycle - have picked up substantially more interest than he has to date. Unfortunately, he may be caught in the cycle that some others are of not having the usual opportunities to work out on college campuses over the summer, of the lack of an in-person spring evaluation period earlier this year.
Listed as a pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com (and he has played the position for Greenwood), Tolbert is viewed as a receiver prospect at the next level. There are Power 5 programs that have taken a look at his potential for the next level and walked away impressed, but as stated earlier, he simply has not been able to test and work out in person in front of college coaches.
We spoke with one area coach recently whose team played Greenwood last year:
"We thought he was a stud," he said.
Savannah State has offered, but this is a prospect that should frankly have more.
Given the fact that he played so much wildcat QB (last season he caught 20 balls at WR), teams probably just want to see him in person catching the football and running routes. Yet Tolbert brings a lot to like at receiver. He has excellent size at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he's a physical presence running the football in the open field and has some explosion, and he's a willing blocker on the edge.
More programs would be wise to jump in here.
